Although the Bloomsburg Swim Teams are still unable to practice in the Nelson Field House due to renovations, thes team have not allowed this inconvience to hinder their potential for the upcoming season.
This year, the swim teams are led by men's senior captains Joe Bentz, David Mancinelli, and Dereck Fritz and women's senior captains Kelly Ayres, Ashley Carroll, and Allie Reed. The swim team will be hosting the Bloomsburg Relays this Saturday on October 10th starting at 1 pm. In order to prepare for this major event, the teams spent the summer training in various ways. Junior Juan Castaneda explained how he trained over the summer, "I swam almost every morning at the Sunbury YMCA pool. Also I did some running, lifting, and core training."
The team welcomes four new freshmen swimmers on the men's team and nine new freshmen swimmers on the women's team. The upperclassmen on the team are excited to have a new group of promising freshmen. Junior Tyler DeLorenzo added "Yeah, we have some new freshmen who bring a lot to the team and we are really excited to see how they perform over the upcoming season. They are a great group of people." Although the team is welcoming new freshmen, previous teammates had to say goodbye to five valuable senior swimmers: Stacey Henry, Sara Hippeli, Britnie Spaunhorst, Liz Tesoro, and Steve Withers.
In a re-cap of last season, head coach Stu Marvin details his teams' achievements in Huskies Swimmers Alumni Newsletter. He writes "Going into the conference meet in February we had qualified 22 out of 24 guys. In looking back it may be the largest number of men qualifiers in the history of the program. Unfortunately, we had to leave 4 at home due to the PSAC limit of 18.
Meanwhile, in terms of the women's side "A total of 14 made the trip with several missing the cut by only a tenth or less. The meet was outstanding with our troops constantly climbing out of the pool with career best swims" he continued.
He went on to say, "The highlight was Juan Castenda qualifying for NCAA's in the 100 fly in 50.21. In the end we had 5 new team records, 32 additions to the All Time Top 10 at BU and a great feeling of anticipation for next year."
The teams hope that this year will be no different. The swimmers have created new team goals as well as personal goals for the new season. They have begun practicing and are anticipating this upcoming season. Now that the team has a new coach and renovations have been made to the pool in the Nelson Fieldhouse, the team is confident that success is on the horizon. To sum up all the new- found anticipation and excitement, Jeremy Frey states "Stu Marvin is a new coach who swam here at Bloomsburg back in the day and takes full control of the team. There is an assistant coach Erin who was a swimmer herself at IUP and is going to make us a better team. The pool was also renovated over the summer and we got brand new locker rooms, new digital clocks and score board, new record boards, and a new positive attitude to win."
