The Bloomsburg University men’s rugby team was defeated on Saturday by Millersville.
Millersville opened up the game with a try less than five minutes into the game, giving them a 5-0 lead. The score set the tone for the game, as Millersville would physically dominate the game.
After controlling the ball for most of the first half, Millersville punched in another try to take a 10-0 lead. Bloomsburg regrouped after the second try to make the rest of the first half a virtual stalemate.
With only a few minutes left in the first half, Bloomsburg’s Kevin Orlandy scored a try to seize the momentum. Bloomsburg missed the conversion kick following the try, making the score 10-5 at the half.
Bloomsburg got the ball to start the second half and tried to impose its will on Millersville, but miscues plagued the Huskies. Millersville was very opportunistic, winning most of the second half scrums and capitalizing on every Bloomsburg mistake.
Millersville scored early in the second half to take a 15-5 lead, then again soon after to make it a 20-5 game. After what seemed to be a missed retry, a kick that missed wide by over ten yards and fell short, Millersville was awarded a re-kick because a Bloomsburg player was leaning on the goalpost. Millersville would capitalize on the Bloomsburg miscue, making the conversion kick and extending its lead to 22-5.
Bloomsburg, however, was determined to get back in the game. With 20 minutes left in the game, Bloomsburg’s Garret Link scored from several yards out to make the score 22-10 in favor of Millersville.
Millersville played keep-away for the rest of the game, attempting to control the ball and make sure Bloomsburg could not cut further into its lead. With less than ten minutes to play, Millersville broke free to score yet another try to extend its lead to 27-10, ending any comeback hopes Bloomsburg may have had.
