A Haunting In Elysburg

Throughout the month of October, The Voice has been sharing the top ghost stories from the area, covering places from a haunted sorority house to the Haas Center’s ballerina ghost and even a story about the “Flannel Man” in Bakeless.

This week, The Voice wanted to do something different. Instead of finding a new ghost story to send shivers down your spine, The Voice dug up something better-a local Halloween attraction to keep you screaming all weekend long.

The Elysburg Haunted House, located on Rt. 487 at the Elysburg Gun Club, will have two more nights of fun for audiences to discover.  The haunted house will show on the 30 and 31, with live band Headwig playing on the 30. The event, sponsored by the Elysburg and Overlook Fire Departments, starts at 7 p.m. and runs until the last person goes through. (In the past, it has run until 10 p.m. or even until 1 p.m. The end time depends on the crowd.)  The cost is $8 per person. The Elysburg Haunted House is about a half-hour drive from BU.

There are several new features added this year. An addition was recently put on the house, leaving the house with 13 rooms of fear. New electronic props have also been added, adding more sights and sounds for horror-lovers.

Upon arrival, audiences can expect Halloween to literally jump out at them. Audiences should expect to see creatures of all sorts lurking the premises as they wait in line. Food, drinks and souvenirs will also be available for purchase during this time, making the wait seem less. When audience members are nearing their turn, they will see a wooden path, which leads to the old creepy-looking house. Only those brave enough to make it through the entrance path should enter the house, which is much more frightening. Inside, audiences will creep through the dark hallways and visit each of the 13 rooms. They will visit the new electrocution room and witness a murder scene, as well as visit popular scenes like the “jungle room” and the basement, never knowing when someone (or something!) will be waiting for them. Those who are lucky will get out alive. After leaving the house, audiences will walk down another wooden pathway-but beware. The paths are full of hidden surprises.

The university is sponsoring a bus trip to the Elysburg Haunted House on Friday, Oct. 30. Sign ups are at the information desk in the Kehr Union. The bus will depart from the hospital lot at 7 p.m.

Unfortunately, the Elysburg Haunted House is the only one The Voice could find that was close enough to BU. But for those of you interested in driving a bit further, there are plenty of other attractions to enjoy this weekend. You can find them on hauntedhouse.com.  Those with certain medical conditions are cautioned, as strobe lights and smoke may have an effect on certain individuals.
