INDIANA, Pa. — Carpe diem, "seize the day." The Bloomsburg Huskies did this and more as they defeated Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) yesterday with a commanding 4-0 shutout.

This was an important game and pushed the Huskies to 2-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), ranking them second below Lock Haven University.

Bloomsburg wasted no time in the first half by gaining possession and taking it to the goal. Sheila Zilinski netted a goal off of a pass from Shanna Fritz.

A pass from Nikki Hartranft was all Fritz needed to score a goal and boost the Huskies to 2-0 going into halftime.

Hartranft gunned in two goals in the second half. Both were unassisted.

"We had fun on the turf," said Hartranft. "I didn't play my best game, but we pulled each other up throughout it and never let down."

Bloomsburg held up its offensive reputation with 19 shots on goal, and seven penalty corners.

The defense kept a strong hold on IUP's Amy Pincock and Julie Hess, who both average over one goal per game.

"We had a little pressure, but altogether we played really well," said goalie Trish Leitzel.

Leitzel stopped three shots on goal en route to her fifth shutout of the season.

Bloomsburg plays Mansfield on Saturday at home. Despite the important PSAC Shippensburg game looming over their heads next week, the Huskies maintain their focus.

"We take it one game at a time," Hartranft said. "Mansfield is our next challenge. We don't even consider focusing on the game against Ship."

Last year's key game against Shippensburg was lost by a fluke goal in overtime. This season, Bloomsburg dropped to second rank according to the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll.

That hasn't bothered the Huskies. After opening the season with a seven game winning streak, Bloomsburg just wants to take its eighth game of the year against Mansfield.
