Kutztown came ready to hold their own in Saturday's match up against BU, but there were no signs that Bloomsburg would let the Golden Bears dominate. Nine minutes into the game Ashley Heckard took control of the ball and ran it right into the cage. Holding strong, both teams held together defensively, not permitting any goals for the remainder of the first half. Powering up after half time, Kutztown came right in with a goal. This didn't worry the Huskies. Both Jamie Vanartsdalen and Sam Kropa charged the goal to give Bloomsburg its 3-1 win over KU.
As the rain fell over the Sports Stadium Tuesday evening, Bloomsburg hustled out onto the field with no intentions of letting the weather slow them down. The 1-13 Lions proved to be an easy opponent. Ten minutes into the game, Venessa Witman carefully placed a penalty stroke past the Rock's goalie. About a minute later, Ashley Heckard raced into the goal after receiving a pass fom Kelly Trevisan, making the score 2-0. The saturated field slowed the ball's momentum for the entire game. Playing the majority of the game on the offensive half, Jamie Vanarsdalen added to the scoring only three minutes later. Noticing that this would be a good game to put the key players on the sidelines, Coach Hutchinson gave the rest of the girls a chance to shine. The game continued on as the BU Huskies worked on quick, accurate passing, rather than worrying about racking up the score. With seven minutes left to play, Morgan Wolfe drove the ball into the goal, finishing the score at 4-0.
Time after time the Bloomsburg Huskies prove to be a skilled team. In many past seasons, BU has come out in the end as number one. Coach Hutchinson should receive much of the credit for Bloomsburg's success. Players have come and gone, leaving their mark, and BU field hockey still remains solid. Why can't Bloomsburg field hockey make it into Division One? "We need the funding to even consider moving up." Hutchinson commented earlier in the season. Possibly in years to come, BU field hockey will be among the best of the NCAA. For now, they will continue leaving their mark in DII hockey.
Next weekend the Huskies will battle East Stroudsburg on their territory, and Sunday at noon they will play the 3-9 Catawba Indians at the Sports Stadium. As BU approaches the finals, they aim to demolish the remainder of their opponents.
