The grey view on abortion

Mike Graziano

Issue date: 11/9/06 Section: opinion
On October 26th, I headed to my Muslim World class in the morning and picked up two issues of "The Voice. "

Looking at the front page I saw my friend Virnice Aikey and her friends showing their support for an ever-growing issue in the United States. Throughout the entire day I could only look at the picture and remember movies and text book pages about this issue from high school. I also remember how there was this huge argument in one of my college courses here my first year. A lot of people seem to only view it as being pro life or pro-abortion. However, I personally have another opinion on the problem that has consumed the nation just like gay marriage and the death penalty have for a number of years. With a lot of issues both sides bring up such good points and the ideals that one cannot choose either side of the argument.

Issues such as these aren't cut and dry "black" or "white". In this particular case, I support and don't support both; I am "Grey." Obviously the color shows me as neutral. I won't pick a side because I think they are correct in some and are incorrect in other ideals. Pro-life for example immediately uses the process of being pregnant, no matter if you have been pregnant for a day or thirty days as a reason to take control of a woman's body. The fetus doesn't have a name, identification, social security number, or anything else for that matter. But as Pro-life advocates would say: "It has life." Yes it does. But so does the mother.

What if that woman was raped, or is extremely young? Also what happens if the doctor sees possible problems with the birthing process? For example, the baby or the mother may have a very small chance of living, or just the fact that the percent could be around 50 or 60 percent could scare a mother. Or maybe the baby has deformities and the parents do not wish to have that.

What then? Some will persist in saying that perhaps the young girl consented to have sex. Either way that baby inside her will ruin her life, an obvious mistake that our current culture is just starting to skim the surface with (since kids are doing a lot of things at the ripe age of 13 now).
