As students find their passions and figure out which fields they are most interested in working, they begin their job and internship search. They can ask their advisers. They can fill out applications and wait for acceptance or rejection letters. They can look online to try to find opportunities.
The BU Career Development Center hopes to further aid students by sponsoring the 14th annual Career and Internship Expo on Wednesday, November 7 from 12-3 PM in the Kehr Union multipurpose rooms. This expo is open to students in all majors, and they can pick up a job search guide from Student Services Center 201 for more information and assistance in creating their resumes, cover letters, and interviewing.
Representatives from the BU alumni association, local organizations, national organizations and some graduate programs will be there to answer questions. Companies in attendance will be seeking students from business, management, communication, human resources and education majors. Some participants include the Devereux Pocono Center, Federal Bureau of Prisons and KidsPeace National Centers.
According to Scott Schwartz from KidsPeace: "Kids in crisis are everywhere, and they are faced with physical and emotional abuse, drugs, peer pressure and the like. There are internships for creative services with graphics, television, and writing, which will all involve interaction with kids and office work."
"I'm glad there is going to be a career fair on campus because it gives me an chance to get my foot in the door to learn about internships in my field," sophomore business major Julie Meikrantz said. "This will help me make a decision about where to work during my junior or senior year."
Organizations such as the Geisinger Health System, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Keystone Service Systems and Lancaster General Hospital are seeking students from nursing, psychology, criminal justice, and social work programs.
According to Geisinger's website: "Our mission is to enhance quality of life through an integrated health service organization based on patient care, education, research and community service. Nursing opportunities include working in the cancer center, labor and delivery, home health and pediatrics. It gives students a chance to see for themselves what jobs are out there and if companies are looking for people,"
Senior Jamie Milheim said. "Being able to do social work in a hospital would give students real-life experience."
According to Career Development Center workers, the Expo will help students figure out their goals or give them new ideas.
"The Career Development Center provides career counseling and planning assistance to all students, and the companies will speak with people in nearly all majors," Carol Barnet, Career Development Center director, said. "This is a great way to make contacts, gather career and graduate school information and get a lead on or secure an internship or job."
