Maddy Rodriguez became passionate about breast cancer awareness when her mother passed away of breast cancer. In honor of her mother, Rdorgiuez puts much effort into organizing the annual Breast Cancer Run/Walk at Bloomsburg University and has raised thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society through this event.
The university has certainly been doing its part to recognize October as breast cancer awareness month. BU's fifth annual Breast Cancer Run/Walk was held Sunday, October 28 at the Student Recreation Center on campus. The cost was $20 for all participants and all proceeds benefited the American Cancer Society.
"All of our goals for the event were achieved," said Rodriguez, director of the multicultural center at BU and the Breast Cancer Run/Walk coordinator.
The event pulled in 377 participants, including students, community members, families of BU students, cancer survivors, and university faculty and staff. There were also a number of student organizations that participated, including Greek organizations and student teams that took part in the walk.
"It was an amazing turnout. Our goal each year is to increase our number of participants and to make sure we are making an impact on campus in terms of making everyone aware of this 'deadly monster,'" said Rodriguez.
Numbers are still being calculated for this year's event and donations are still being received, but currently over $8,000 has been raised. Over the past five years the event has raised over $45,000 for the American Cancer Society.
"I was extremely pleased with the turn out and the support I have received from the students and Bloomsburg as a whole in the last five years. I thank them all for their continuous support!" said Rodriguez.
Runners competed in four different categories: females over 30, females under 30, males under 30, and males over 30. Claire Lawrence, Meg Bostwick, Joe Seidler, and Mark Bauman were the top finishers in the respective categories. Delta Epsilon Beta and Alpha Phi Omega were recognized as the Greek organization and student organization that raised the most money for the event.
Rodriguez is already excited for next year's Run/Walk and says that she will start planning for next year's event soon.
