Democrats you don't know about

Issue date: 11/1/07 Section: opinion
Unless you've been living in a hole for the past six months or more, you know who is running for the Democrat nomination in 2008 for the presidency. The top three runners are New York Senator Hillary Clinton, Illinois Senator Barack Obama, and North Carolina Senator John Edwards. These three senators have captured the spotlight for this campaign since the beginning. The diversity of the candidates, especially Clinton and Obama's, have raised new questions about the presidency and what is represents. But who are the other five men running for the nomination? Who these men are and what they want to achieve for this country are just as important as the top three runners.
The other five candidates for the Democratic Party nomination for the presidency are Delaware Senator Joe Biden, Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd, Mike Gravel from Massachusetts, Ohio Representative Dennis Kucinich, and the Governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson. All of these men have different views and opinions on all of the issues that should be important to you.
After watching the "YouTube" debate hosted by CNN's Anderson Cooper, I had a better understanding of which candidate was the one I wanted to support. The candidates were asked different questions concerning their positions on gay marriage, apparitions for slavery, the crisis in Darfur, the war in Iraq, women in the draft, and many other topics. This debate was important because it allowed citizens young and old, to ask the candidates the questions they wanted answers to. Even though the top three candidates which at the time were Clinton, Obama, and Edwards, were asked the most questions, the other candidates still had opportunities to discuss their positions.
When asked about the idea of gay marriage, Representative Kucinich, Senator Dodd, and Governor Richardson, agreed it should be legal, while Senator Edwards said that his religion does not support the idea, but his wife, Elizabeth, does agree with it.
When it came to questions about the war in Iraq, a few of the candidates, including my choice for president, Senator Obama, claimed to have not supported it from the beginning. But both Senator Obama and Senator Biden, said that they could start removing troops within the next year. All of the candidates said that they believed we shouldn't be there anymore and that they want the troops out. Governor Richardson even went as far as to say that lives are more important then Bush's legacy.
