Hard work, team unity, determination, the Bloomsburg Cross Country teams have it all. You see them running all over campus and all over town, these boys and girls have put in the miles, making this a season to remember. "When you like the girls you run with, you can run with more heart and dedication, which has definitely been a main theme throughout this season," says senior, and co-captain Amber Hackenburg. Competing all around the area, at places as far as Buffalo New York, and racing against some of Pennsylvania's top runners these Bloomsburg teams were definitely making a name for themselves.
This past weekend the two teams traveled to Kutztown University in the pouring rain to compete in the annual PSAC meet. Overcoming every obstacle in their way, from the terrible weather conditions to a mediocre write-up in the PSAC brochure, the two teams preformed at the top of their game, not running scared of any team in the conference. "Bloomsburg thrives in rough conditions. I believe that gave us the cutting edge," says Hackenberg.
The Bloomsburg girl's team went down in history Saturday morning after the crossed the finish-line, winning themselves the title of PSAC Champions. When asked how she felt when she first heard of the team's victory, Sophomore Angela Borealo say, "I was overwhelmed to be honest. Every one of the girls ran phenomenally. We all came together as a team and learned how to work off of one another and that is what helped us succeed." Coming in first place for the Huskies was senior Amber Hackenberg, who placed fifth overall, finishing second for Bloomsburg was sophomore Andrea Kellock placing ninth in the conference. Keeping the pack close sophomore Angela Borealo and junior Bethany Schwing took 12th and 13th place, all receiving the award of "All Conference." Junior Ashley Shuck, also in the top five for the Bloomsburg Huskies placed 26th in the PSAC. Never looking for an excuse to run, junior Bethany Schwing states, "I loved the sloppy course, rainy weather and ankle-deep mud. It was something that we weren't used to but I liked the change." Coach Karen Brandt had nothing but the up-most confidence in her girls, "I knew my team was both mentally and physically prepared when I saw them standing in their huddle at the starting-line and let out that inspiring chant, 'IT'S BREAKFAST TIME!' I just wanted them to go for it, and that's exactly what they did." The Bloomsburg Huskies race again this weekend at Lock Haven to compete in the NCAA Regional's in hopes to advance and compete at Nationals.
The Huskies boys' team also performed remarkably well this weekend, surpassing the competitions expectations and taking 5th place in the conference. Finishing in first place for Bloomsburg was senior Dan Tallarico, "I feel as though our team had something to prove, as we seem to get no respect from the rest of the conference. We knew we had some talent and we could pull off some sort of victory if we all worked together." Finishing behind Tallarico, was junior Mike Dalton, sophomore Misha Litvinov and senior Jimmy Stockley, all crossing the line within 10 seconds of each other. As Dalton said, "We were the epitome of a pack." Freshman Auston Martzell was also in the top five for the Bloomsburg Huskies. Still with more to accomplish the boys will also be competing Saturday at Regional's.
