University Student Dan Knorr was elected mayor of Bloomsburg Tuesday and will take office as the youngest person to ever hold the position in January. Knorr, 22, ran unopposed and received 914 total votes. When current Mayor Claude Renninger voiced he wouldn't be running for office in 2007, Knorr entertained thoughts of vying for office in December, officially throwing his hat into the ring in January.
On Tuesday Nov. 6, BU's Democracy Matters hosted an Election Day event that featured, among other things, speeches by Dr. Neil Strine, assistant professor of political science, and Emily Kinkead, the president of Democracy Matters. Democracy Matters informs and engages college students on issues of campaign finance reform, social justice, civil rights, environmental reform and democratic reform in the election of candidates.
Students, organizations, and athletic teams are all encouraged to come bid farewell to President Jessica Kozloff, Hawaiian style, at a luau party tonight. "We just want to say thank you for the time she served here," said CGA vice president Gregory Cechak.
In spite of a tough race against Shirley Turner, 2004 Bloomsburg University graduate Kristen Gensel lost Tuesday's election for the spot of Columbia County treasurer. However, she remains interested and active in local politics. She gained local political experience working for Columbia County in other capacities.
