Lauren Heidelbaugh started running competitively in sixth grade and hasn't stopped. When she started college at Bloomsburg University, she chose to run without being under control of a coach in order to have more freedom to chase her passion.
Now acting as President of BU's Husky Running Club, Heidelbaugh has been working tirelessly to organize the 3rd Annual Great American Smoke Out Race Expo-5K Run/Walk for November 11 to benefit the Bloomsburg YMCA and The American Lung Association.
"After running so many races, it's wonderful being able to give back and play the role of race director and let other people enjoy a well-organized event," said Heidelbaugh. Heidelbaugh recently completed the Steamtown Marathon with another friend from the Husky Running Club.
The race is co-sponsored by DAWN and the Husky Running Club. The organizations are working along with the Bloomsburg YMCA to put together the event and all of the proceeds are donated to the YMCA and the American Lung Association.
There are currently over 180 participants registered for the race, which is a record for the event. Registration will continue up until race day, so numbers are expected to grow until the start of the race.
The 5K race, which starts and finishes at the Bloomsburg YMCA will also include a 1 Mile Kids' Fun Run for those of age 12 and under to get children involved in the event.
"This is a great cause and we added the Fun Run for kids this year in hopes of getting the message out to a younger group about the dangers of tobacco," said Heidelbaugh.
As the Drugs, Alcohol, and Wellness Network on campus, DAWN feels it is important to get involved with such a beneficial cause. DAWN has worked to fund the event, contacting vendors and collecting money for the race to purchase t-shirts and other souvenirs. They have also helped with registration and will be organizing the other Great American Smoke Out events planned for next week.
"DAWN relies on peer networking so it's important that we support this event and get students and peers involved to show the significance of DAWN here on campus," said Gordon Kusturiss, student director of DAWN.
