Bloomsburg University will observe Earth Day April 22 and 23 with a variety of panels, guest speakers and performers, on- and off-campus tours, and more.

This year's Earth Day celebrations are organized by the SOLVE office and the Green Campus Initiative with some participation from Democracy Matters, and the Political Science Student Association and political science department. The American Democracy Project (ADP) is also sponsoring the event.

At the panels, students will have the opportunity to learn more about alternative power sources such as bio fuels and solar and nuclear power, "green collar jobs" that contribute to the planet's wellbeing, and environmentalism and social responsibility, among other topics. The panels will take place at the Scranton Commons Amphitheater, and in Kehr Union Multipurpose room B.

Tours are planned to show students how the university has started "going green" on campus at the steam plant and on upper campus, while others will take students off-campus to the recycling center, organic farms, and the Henry Hood Center for Rural Health Research at Geisinger, according to Tim Pelton at SOLVE.

Bob Edgar, a former Pennsylvania congressman, is slated to speak Thursday on behalf of Common Cause, a non-profit lobby organization "working to make government at all levels more honest, open and accountable, and to connect citizens with their democracy," according to commoncause.org.

During the Earth Day festivities, a ground breaking will take place on upper campus near Monty's for an herb garden. The herbs will be used in cooking at the Scranton Commons, Pelton said.

A folk singer may provide entertainment in the Amphitheater, and ADP plans to offer free food. Tables featuring many groups from both on and off campus will offer food for sale, and as well as information on a range of topics.

Weather permitting, outdoor recreation activities on the Lycoming Hall lawn are planned. Equipment from the Student Rec Center will be available for use.

Because of weather and other factors at this time some plans are tentative. For more up to date information contact the SOVLE office at (570) 389-4788, or stop by the Student Service Center.
