Cheerleaders bust out and help raise funds
The 2010-2011 cheerleading team was revealed after an intense weekend of tryouts. On March 26, 61 young ladies came to tryout for the upcoming season. After a long first day of tryouts, only 40 girls returned for the second day. One cheer, one dance, two jumps, 25 pushups and gymnastics were all judged and evaluated on skill and technique.
Lacrosse team advances to the PSAC semifinal game versus Lock Haven following a quarterfinal win
Last Saturday, Bloomsburg women’s lacrosse hosted a game against Kutztown University. This day was also BU’s Senior Day. Through out the game, Bloomsburg completely dominated play. BU defeated Kutztown 23-5 at Sports Stadium. On Tuesday, Bloomsburg University’s women’s lacrosse team defeated East Stroudsburg University with a final score of 19-15 at Sports Stadium.

The Bloomsburg University softball team has advanced to the next round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament this past weekend. Overall, the Huskies went 3-1, avoiding double elimination against Kutztown. Going into the tournament, Bloomsburg remained the top ranked team in the NCAA Division II Regional Poll.

This should come as a shock to many considering that when these two parted ways in 2006 after Iverson refused to play in the fourth quarter against Chicago, the 76ers organization took down his name plate and edited him out of video highlights before he was even traded.

The Gannon Golden Knights had just kicked a field goal to take a 10-7 lead in overtime and now the Bloomsburg offense began their drive at Gannon’s 25-yard line. With the season officially half way over, a clear picture of the serious contenders is beginning to form. Not much has changed since my first rankings at the quarter mark of the season. The Colts and Saints are still unbeaten at 8-0 and remain number one and two, respectively.

I am going to step back from covering intramurals to write about something that came up this weekend. As we all know, parent’s weekend was this weekend and a lot of things were going on around campus. Coming into the night, the Bloomsburg men’s soccer team was on a mission. A win over East Stroudsburg would put them in the PSAC semi- finals and would afford them the ability to control their own destiny. Both women’s soccer intramural teams, Prestige Worldwide and FC Misfit, faced off in a game in which neither side had any previous wins, this being the third week of the season. They played six-on-six, soccer including a goalie, with modified soccer nets on a chilly Monday night at an upper campus field.

Although the Bloomsburg Swim Teams are still unable to practice in the Nelson Field House due to renovations, thes team have not allowed this inconvience to hinder their potential for the upcoming season. This year, the swim teams are led by men’s senior captains Joe Bentz, David Mancinelli, and Dereck Fritz and women’s senior captains Kelly Ayres, Ashley Carroll, and Allie Reed.

The Bloomsburg University football team got off to a fast start this past weekend in their game against CW Post as they took their first possession and drove the ball 62 yards in four plays, with quarterback Dan Latorre finding wide receiver Cory Stiger for a touchdown.
Intramural sports, which began on Monday, Sept. 21, are seeing a raise in interest, as last semester there was the highest number of student participants in the last 20 years. The sports being offered for the current fall session includes sand volleyball, residence hall indoor volleyball, dodgeball, field hockey, flag football, outdoor soccer and softball.

The Huskies officially began the fall tennis season this past weekend with the annual Bloomsburg Invitational. The event which was limited on Saturday due to rain, allows the Huskies to kick off the season at home, in a more relaxed environment than other conference and tournament play.
