The intramural All-Star basketball game tipped off at Nelson Fieldhouse at 8p.m. Sunday. The game was to decide who was to represent BU at the NCCS Regional Basketball Tournament hosted by Boston University February 19-21.
After a warm up and shoot around the teams took their sides. Maroon took the tip and made a bad pass in the opening seconds leading to a Gold three-pointer.
Maroon bounced back with two of their own, and on their next possession a tip in to take the lead to 8-3. Gold then performed a nice give and go for an easy two-pointer.
McElwee drew a hard foul on a fast break and went to the line, where he knocked down both shots. Mike Varanavage then went coast to coast to hit a smooth right hook. After back and forth jumpers by both sides Varanavage came up with another solid drive to pull the Maroon team within one point. McElwee hit a three, helping Gold maintain their lead at five with two minutes left to play before half. The half ended with a hard foul and two missed free throws.
The second half was started by Dillan Canavan, who brought down the rebound after McElwee missed. McElwee redeemed himself witth a strong drive to the hoop and a crafty left hand for two. Fateem Jackson knocked down a deep three to keep the Gold team rolling.
Canavan came up with a nice reverse layup and followed with a block down low on the other side. Jackson, playing hard, came up with another drive with a layup that kissed off the glass.
Maroon called a timeout down two. Both players from the Bloom Ballers, Mark Daniel and Ray Steffen, looked strong as they knocked down shots and brought down rebounds.
Varanavage hit another mid-range jumper with eight minutes left to play, Maroon had a three-point lead. Varanavage accounted for the last six Maroon points.
Maroon looked for foul calls from refs but to no avail. At a minute and a half left to play it was a five-point game. At the line, Varanavage stepped to the line and knocked down both his shots.
With 20 seconds left on the clock the Maroon team was at the line again, taking three-point shots from the Gold team.
Sloppy play all around made the "All-Star" game look more like a pickup game any night at the rec.
A reminder: entried for intramurals will close this Friday. The Fall II intramurals will include basketball, volleyball, and extreme dodgeball. The leagues will be seperated the same as last season.
