The intramural season starts off next Monday with as many as 825 individuals and over 100 teams total. From last season, the Maroon Intramural All-Star basketball team will be heading to Boston to play in a 36-team tournament. It has been a few years since a team was sent from Bloomsburg. The intramural program is making drastic improvements to keep the sports running as smoothly as possible. The addition to the new online site is making things easier for everyone. You can check schedules, results, sign up, and pretty much everything else regarding the intramural sports. Another huge improvement being done is the basketball referees will acquire training from a Bloomsburg Alumni who has Pac-10 officiating experience. He will train the officials to make sure they are on point with their calls and are able to handle all responsibilities.

Basketball is expected to be the most competitive sport with volleyball coming in a close second this upcoming season. Both leagues will have a competitive league and a recreational league. More teams have joined the recreational league compared to last season to better their chances at winning games and making the playoffs.

The Wednesday mandatory meetings will still be in effect. These meetings are simple, and make sure people are on the same page within the teams and most importantly with the intramural department. The meetings cover expectations from both sides, clarify rules, and clear up any questions or concerns either side might have.

Tony Dreckman the head of the intramural department said he was very pleased with last seasons' intramurals. Every year since Tony has been here, the number of participants has been increasing. He is most excited about the number of female athletes competing and having those numbers grow. He encourages that nobody hold back if they were planning on signing up. Tony also thinks people who are looking at more of a "playground" sport should check out extreme dodge ball. "In my eyes this is the most exciting and most fun to watch" says Tony. He states that it seems more extreme to the viewer then the player, but is definitely an intramural that is growing. It's something different and new that people can try.

Tony and the intramural staff are also looking to add more "playground" sports into upcoming seasons. It's not a definite, but talks of something like a kickball and Wiffle ball league could be in the future. These are sports that anyone can play and it is not necessary to have prior experience.

Sports that anyone can walk onto the field or court and pick up in a matter of minutes are what the department is looking into. These type of sports will be mostly outdoor sports because indoor space is limited. Changes are always being made while some are minor, others major, and sometimes even unseen. To freshmen we wouldn't know the difference between now and even last year.

Ask any player that has been playing for a few years and they will tell you that Tony and the department have made major improvements which leads to people coming back and signing up again and again.

"You know you're doing something right and heading in the proper direction when the same kids and teams sign up season after season," said Tony.

Don't miss out and regret not signing up! There is something for everyone and you truly wont regret it. Tony and the department will continue to make changes for the better and grow in size.
