While watching Tuesdays nights action between Rough Floor and The Ballas in the competitive volleyball league something hit me. Why doesn’t the Intramural league and Student Recreation Center hold more tournaments?

Most kids have schoolwork and other lives but a weekend basketball, volleyball, dodge ball, or even softball tournament could be a huge fundraiser. Just think about the amount of teams that would sign up for a men’s      softball tournament in the warm spring air.

On the side of the intramural department, think about some new equipment that could be bought with the money raised. Consider at the amount of teams that play intramural          basketball, imagine holding a Saturday/Sunday two-day tournament outside with music     playing? Kids would jump at the opportunity to play and take part in something like this.

Now, I’m not calling the Intramural Department out by any means, but I think there is a lot more that could take place with our facilities and space we have available to us. Setting up something like this up isn’t too   difficult and the reward would be outstanding. Kids play their hearts out in all different      activities for a gold shirt, now just imagine I it were a cash prize.

As the volleyball game continued on the court these idea were flowing through my mind. There are so many sports and so many opportunities to make something like this come full circle. Ultimate Frisbee tournament, dodge ball, sand volleyball, and pretty much everything would draw a crowd.

The ideas are limitless and all it would take is a little time to set one of these ideas up. Men and women all have a competitive edge, so they would naturally want to face each other in different sports.

For instance, a team from the basketball league would try their go at a dodge ball     tournament just to prove themselves and their athletic abilities. Girls who played high school softball would give it a go in a tournament without the demanding schedule of the Intramurals. Some people just do not have the time, and a one-day tournament or a two-day tournament would be a great way to let go of some university-related stress or get involved in some athletic activity.

Doing tournaments like this would probably also create a jump in intramural sign ups. Student athletes who were skeptical about signing up before hand could get a taste of the fun and decide they want to join or start a team as well.

As the points clicked off and the match came to a close so did my mind. I can guarantee if there was a sand volleyball tournament, Rough Floor Play and The Ballas would both be taking part.
