The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team won its second straight game Wednesday night, beating Mansfield 74-54 at Nelson Field House.
After beating Kutztown on Saturday on a last-second basket by freshman guard Dana Wieller, the Huskies came out Wednesday night with their fast and furious style of play. Leading 8-6 early in the first half, two straight three pointers by Wieller and Kayla Oxenrider jump started a 15-2 Bloomsburg run. Wieller later hit a three to make it 21-8, and Christine Sereta added two more to cap the run.
"We came out and pushed the ball," said sophomore Kelsey Gallagher. "When we push the ball, we get what we want."
Bloomsburg outscored Mansfield 24-16 in the final nine-plus minutes of the half, building a 47-26 halftime lead. Oxenrider closed the first half with 14 points to lead the Huskies, while Gallagher pulled down six rebounds to lead the Huskies in rebounds.
In the second half, Mansfield made a desperate attempt to get back in the game, eventually cutting the Bloomsburg lead to 13 after a 10-2 run midway through the half. After a Bloomsburg time out, Gallagher sank a three, then added two more from the foul line to extend Bloomsburg's lead to 62-46.
Mansfield never got closer than 13 points, as Bloomsburg finshed the game on a 14-6 run, capped by a three pointer from Tanejha Smith, who then stole a pass and turned into a fast break lay up to close out the scoring for the Huskies, and Mansfield would add two more points on a buzzer beater to bring the final score to 54-74.
Oxenrider was the leading scorer for the Huskies, with 19 points.
Wieller earned PSAC East Freshman of the Week honors for the sixth time this season for the week of Jan. 24-30. The Huskies play at home on Saturday against Cheyney. The game tips off at 1:00 p.m.
