Following two straight wins, their final one against Kutztown to clinch a PSAC playoff tournament berth, the Bloomsburg University women’s basketball team saw its season end in a 74-67 overtime loss Tuesday night to those very same Golden Bears.
The Huskies defeated Mansfield 87-54 last Wednesday 87-54, led by sophomore Kelsey Gallagher’s 24 points. The win kept Bloomsburg in the PSAC playoff picture, but Bloomsburg still had to win its final regular season game at Kutztown to earn a spot in the tournament. On Saturday, Gallagher again led the Huskies to victory, scoring 27 points in the 72-67 victory.
Tuesday night, the Huskies traveled back to second seeded Kutztown as the number three seed in the tournament. The Golden Bears jumped out to an early eight point lead before Bloomsburg went on a 10-0 run to take a 17-15 lead. After the Huskies cut the Kutztown lead to 15-10, freshman Kayla Oxenrider scored three of her team high 21 points on a shot from beyond the arc, then freshman Lauren Ellis scored four straight points to give Bloomsburg the two point advantage.
Bloomsburg extended its lead to five in the first half before Kutztown finished strong to pull to within two points at the break.
In the second half, with just over seven minutes to play in the game, Kutztown led by seven points, but Bloomsburg had a rally of its own up its sleeve.
With the Golden Bears leading by three, Oxenrider went to the foul line for two shots and sank both of them to pull Bloomsburg to within one with just 32 seconds remainingin the contest.
The Golden Bears would sink two free throws to take a 60-57 advantage, but with 11 seconds left in the game, Oxenrider connected on a three pointer to force overtime.
In the overtime period, only one point was scored in the first two minutes, but Kutztown grabbed the lead and never looked back, ending Bloomsburg’s season with a 74-67 loss.
