While most students spent the long winter break relaxing, the Bloomsburg University men’s and women’s swim teams spent their time much differently. The teams spent five days in Bloomsburg where that had practice three times a day. They even traveled to Florida for a ten-day training camp. There the teams “had some tremendous team building moments,” according to Coach Stu Marvin. Both teams have had team bonding moments prior to the trip to Florida judging by their previous accomplishments.

By the end of the first semester, the Huskies were able to establish four new team records and even add 16 new times to the All Time Top Ten List. What is even more impressive is that collectively, the teams had 39 career best swims. At last Friday’s meet, another swimmer on the women’s team qualified for the Conference Championships.

The new addition marks the qualification of the 18th swimmer, the maximum number a team can qualify into the Conference Championships. Prior to the break, 21 swimmers on the men’s side qualified for the Conference Championships, too.

“I believe it is the first time in BU history that both swim teams qualified the maximum number of athletes in the same year,” Marvin said.

Now that the new semester has officially begun, the Bloomsburg University men’s and women’s swim teams are back in the water and making new strides. On Friday in the Nelson Field House pool, the Huskies competed against Shippensburg University. The BU men’s team defeated Shippensburg by a score of 148-114. However, the women’s team lost to Shippensburg 137.5-121.5.

On the women’s side, freshman Jacquie Glaser qualified for the Conference Championships and posted two career best times at the meet Friday. In addition, senior Allie Reed came in first place twice in individual events, the 200-free in 1:59.72 and 100-free in 54.94 seconds.

Meanwhile, on the men’s side, sophomore Jeremy Frey came in first in three individual events, the 200-free, the 200-back, and the 200 IM. Although Frey admits he had a “really tough week of practice prior to the meet on Friday, so I wasn’t expecting to do my best times of the year,” he managed to post his best times for this season.

Finally, sophomore Tim Dorsch took first place in two individual meets, the 100-breast in 1:01.92 and the 200-breast in 2:18.56.

There will be a dual meet this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Nelson Field House pool. The men’s team will compete against Drexel, while the women’s team will compete against East Stroudsburg. After that meet, both teams will then focus and train for the PSAC conference meet. The confidence Reed has in herself and team mates is evident when she states, “I strongly believe that we have a great run to surprise many teams in our conference.”

Certainly, the BU swim teams are ready to do just that.
