Shut out.
The Bloomsburg University Huskies men and women's tennis teams each blanked the University of the Sciences 9-0 on Saturday.
The Huskies came away clean this past Saturday in both doubles and singles where they dominated in their matches, winning by game margins of five or more.
The men's team were able to keep the Devils cool by only using a lineup of six players. They paired off and swept the doubles matches, as well as each taking a singles match win.
Saturday's match was a great chance for us to work on our doubles aggressiveness at all 3 spots. We dominated the match 9-0 and none of the singles matches were remotely close," said Lee Wexler, sophomore tennis player.
Wexler was partnered with Mark Schroeder who was named PSAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his 6-0, 6-0 singles and 8-2 doubles performances.
The female Huskies were on the prowl as they achieved four shut outs in their six singles match-ups. The men had one shutout in their six matches.
Schroeder was the men's top player this week, and Alison Carney was the women's. She and Emily Palko took a win at number one doubles, and she came away with a 6-0, 6-0 win in her singles match. Carney's performance did not go unnoticed as she was named PSAC's Women's tennis Player of the Week, joining up with Schroeder as a BU package deal for the award.
Marty Coyne, head coach, was particularly proud. "The doubles played hard, it was a great opportunity to get out and execute some of our strategies, moving and making some plays," Coyne said. "This weekend gave us a chance to play a lot of different players, especially on the women's team. It boosted team morale."
Both the men and the women's team currently have a .625 winning percentage, while both of their records stand at 5-3.
"We are starting to play better, but we are not there yet," Coyne added. He should know considering he has the third best BU men's tennis team coaching record, and holds the first best women's tennis team coaching record in school history.
