In a tremendously bone-chilling effort, Quest sponsored its second annual Human Powered Winter Festival on Saturday. In spite of the maliciously icy weather, the festival succeeded in making an impact.

The event took place Jan. 30 near the climbing wall on upper campus and was the work of Quest and the individuals who aided them in the program. It was held in order to promote the awareness of human powered winter sports and activities, as well as provide those many inexperienced individuals with enough knowledge to hopefully avoid the sometimes-inevitable circumstance of wintery injury.

The event kicked off at 11 a.m. without problem. Registrations for the first annual 5k Zinger race took place, and an hour later the race was underway.

Due to the undeniably selfless work of Quest and those individuals whom they contacted to aid them in their program, the event kicked off at 11am without any problem. Registrations for the first annual 5K Zinger race took place, and an hour later the race went under way.

The race took place along a single-person path through the woods, where 24 people braved the bitter cold. The winner, announced on the Quest website, was Jesse Miller, with a time of 26:14.

Other events that day included: an intro to cross country skiing, dog-sledding, information on winter clothes and camping, ice climbing 101, avalanche beacons, snowshoeing basic, and hike, hypothermia and winter injuries, and styles of skiing.

Four of eight Huskies were chosen in intervals to run around a makeshift course created by Howlin' Huskies Kennel. Due to the unfortunate lack of snow, the huskies paraded around and gave dog-sled rides by pulling those who were interested on a homemade, three-wheeled dogsled.

The festival was scheduled to occur snow, rain, or shine, and had a few tables setup for local vendors to display their merchandise. Vargo Outdoors, located in Lewisburg, was among the participating vendors, as well as River Towns Race Series.

The event lasted from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. and was an overall success despite the cold. The proceeds from 5k Zinger went to the Quest outdoor recreation and leadership community of Bloomsburg University to fun their activities and events.
