The sixth ranked Division II Husky softball team have won a remarkable 21 straight games and clinched first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division in Tuesday's double header against Mansfield.
The final scores were 12-0 and 8-0, both games were called after five innings of play. Nikki Shiko went a combined 4-7 and drove in five runs while Emily Young hit a grand slam in game two.
In game one, the Huskies took control during a hitting explosion, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second. Bloomsburg sent 12 batters to the plate getting four hits and taking advantage of three walks and two hit batters. Shiko came up big with a bases-loaded triple and was knocked in by a single from Jenna Hampton.
The bottom of the third was no different for the Huskies, as they tacked on five more runs. Danielle Lazorka drove home two runs with a single while Lacy Mauro had an RBI triple.
Shavaun Fisher pitched game one, and closed it out allowing just a lead-off single in the fifth, but getting the next three batters out in order. As per usual, Fisher didn't let up at all during the duration of the game. As if Fisher didn't have control enough over the plate working the inside and outside corners, once she had a strike on the batter, it was lights out. In totality, Fisher finished allowing two hits and accumulating five strikeouts.
Game two was scoreless through the first two innings before the Huskies broke through in the bottom of the third. Lazorka reached on an error and moved to second on a bunt. Lazorka then scored on a single by Sam Pientack to make it 1-0.
Bloomsburg then put the game away by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Huskies opened the inning with five straight hits with Shiko having an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Lazorka singled in one run and Mauro hit a sacrifice fly plating another run for a 4-0 lead. Pientack then singled to load the bases and one out later, the lefty hitting Young hit an opposite field shot, giving the Huskies an 8-0 lead.
Freshman pitcher Cait Paine closed out the win with a perfect fifth inning to earn the victory. Paine struck out four and did not walk a single batter.
This past Saturday the Huskies swept Clarion by scores of 8-1 and 12-5, giving head coach Jan Hutchinson her 1,200th career win. Hutchinson, a true coaching legend, now has a career softball record of 1,200-283-2. She is the all-time leader in career softball victories in Division II history.
In game one against Clarion Pientack was 1-4 with a two-run homer, while Shiko was 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Fisher pitched game one, allowing just five hits and striking out five to get the win.
In game two, the Huskies banged out 19 hits led by a 4-5 effort from Shiko, who also drove in four runs and scored once. Casey Masimini was 4-4 with three runs scored and one RBI, while Sinea Gallagher went 3-4 with three runs scored and one RBI.
Fisher also got the win in game two with 3.2 innings of relief, striking out three and walking one.
Along with sweeping both series, the team swept both weekly awards handed out by the PSAC on Monday. Pientack was named the PSAC Central Division co-Player of the Week, while Fisher was named Pitcher of the Week for an astonishing fifth time this season.
On the season, Pientack is hitting .338 with five home runs and 26 RBI. For the week Pientack had a slugging percentage of .923 with 24 total bases. On the year Fisher is 23-3 with an impressive 1.03 ERA, having 199 strikeouts in 165 innings of work. Last week she went 6-0 for the Huskies with a 0.78 ERA, as Bloomsburg took control of the PSAC Central Division race.
Bloomsburg is now 37-3 overall and 14-0 in the division. The Huskies will play at IUP on Friday before hosting Kutztown on Saturday and Holy Family on Sunday.
