Bloomsburg University's men's and women's swim teams hosted their last home meet of the regular season at the Nelson Fieldhouse pool on Sunday. The women's team competed against East Stroudsburg University, while the men's team competed against Drexel University. The meet marked not only the last home meet of the regular season, but also the final time the seniors on the team will host a meet of the regular season at the Nelson Fieldhouse Pool.
"As a team, we did very, very well," stated Allie Reed.
And this is true, taking into consideration that many of the Huskies swimmers accomplished career best swims, including Reed on Saturday at the tri-meet.
On the women's team, Reed came in first place twice at the meet. She finished first in the 50-free with a time of 25.05 and the 100-free with a time of 54.48. Reed was also part of a winning relay team. The other members included sophomore Sarah Grawe, sophomore Brittany McNeil, and freshman Madeline Barlow. The team came in first in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:51.69.
The Huskies performed well again in more individual meets. Sophomore Miranda Steel placed first in the 200-free with a time of 1:59.63. Additionally, freshman Julia DeVincent came in second with a time of 2:02.92 and freshman Kayla Weisenbach finished in third in 2:03.21. During the 200-IM, Graw came in first place in a time of 2:17.17 and freshman Kelsey Brooker came in second place in a time of 2:18.10. More individual wins came from sophomore Ashley Carsia and Barlow. Carsia finished first in the 500-free in 5:13.79 and Barlow finished first in the 100-fly in 1:00.87. Senior Katie Liebig and sophomore Kelly Duggan established career best swims on Saturday. Liebig swam the 200-fly in 2:23.40 and Duggan who had two career best swims, swam the 100-breast in 1:13.22 and the 200-breast in 2:40.02.
Meanwhile, on the men's team, junior Ryan Lighter, freshman Nick Ortlieb, junior Juan Castaneda, and senior David Mancinelli came in first in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:39.22. Mancinelli won an individual event at the meet against Drexel on Sunday. He took first in the 50-free in 22.68, while sophomore Jeremy Frey came in first in the 100-back with a time of 54.67.
The Huskies continued to place in the top ranks as Ortlie finished second in the 100-breast in 1:01.89, while sophomore Tim Dorsch swam the 100-breast too, finishing third with a time of 1:02.64. Additionally, junior Ben Safran finished in second in the 200-fly in 1:59.58 and junior John King who came in second in the 500-free, finished with a time of 4.53.80.
With the PSAC Championships only two weeks away, the Huskies are as committed as ever to their sport. They will spend the next 14 days practicing, planning, and strategizing for their future performances.
Castaneda, who knows the talent and potential of himself and his team mates, speaks on behalf of his team saying "We all hope for everyone to have a good performance and jump into that 3rd spot, right behind West Chester and Clarion, that would be huge for Bloomsburg Swimming."
