Three PSAC games and four overtimes later, the Bloomsburg men's basketball team had zero ‘W's in the win column after a string of very competitive games which saw the Huskies just miss out against three of their biggest rivals. On Jan. 16 the Huskies took PSAC-rival West Chester to overtime, but were beaten in the final seconds, falling 78-77. A few days later they again took to the court against an exceptional 14-1 East Stroudsburg University, with hopes of pulling the major upset in front of a packed house at Nelson Fieldhouse. The Huskies controlled the game throughout, leading by as many as 16 with just under five minutes to go. But as has been the story all year, the defense was not able to hold, allow the Warriors to get back in the game and ultimately force overtime. Unable to take advantage of an oppurtunity of the first overtime, the Huskies were taken to a second overtime. The defense again was unable to hold up and East Stroudsburg used their dominance from beyond the arc to stun the Huskies on their own floor 101-96.
The Huskies responded well their next time on the court, Jan. 23 on the road against Millersville. The Huskies traded baskets with the Marauders for most of the first half, led by the men in the middle, Larry Webster and Adon El. Webster finished the game with eight points while El finished the game with a team high 13 points.
The Huskies then surged out to the lead for most of the second half, behind the dominant play of guards Trevon Johnson and Jesse Betar. But yet again down the stretch the Huskies, fatal flaw re-emerged, with the team not getting key stops defensively in the closing minutes, allowing Millersville to claw their way back into the game and eventually surge ahead by three with just under 30 seconds left. The Huskies, saving grace at the end of this one was Betar, who nailed a huge three-pointer with 16 seconds left to send the game to overtime. In overtime, Millersville guard Jason Blake was the assassin for the Marauders, nailing Ville's big shots down the stretch and then icing the game at the line in the waning seconds of the overtime period. This move sent the Huskies back to Bloomsburg with a 61-57 loss, their third straight overall defeat in overtime. The Huskies fell to 6-10 overall and 0-4 in the PSAC.
Although their record may not show it, the Huskies have certainly showed immense improvement over last year's squad. In addition, three of their four losses in the PSAC have come in the last three overtime losses, all of which could have very easily resulted in wins for Bloomsburg.
The Huskies look to change their luck taking on Shippensburg on the road before facing the near-impossible task of taking down Kutztown University, which is ranked among the top teams in the national poll for Division II and had played a competitive game in the preseason with Villanova, which is currently ranked third in the nation in Division I NCAA basketball polls.
If the Huskies can find a groove and come out with a big win against Shipp, use Kutztown as a measuring stick game to see where they are at and then post some big wins in February, the Huskies could perhaps still sneak their way into the back end of the PSAC playoffs come March.
