Felines prove superiority to canines

Nittany Lions win nine of ten matches to top Huskies

The Bloomsburg University Huskies Wrestling team hosted sixth-ranked Penn State in an exciting match on Friday in front of a standing room only crowd of 2,374 at Nelson Field House. Though the Huskies lost 9 of the 10 matches on the night, they wrestled hard and showed plenty of desire and charisma against one of the top-ranked wrestling programs in the country.

Bloomsburg, coming off of a three-match win streak by way of the Boston University Duals, had hoped to carry their momentum into the faceoff with Penn State on Friday night. However, the Nittany Lions got off to a very impressive start, gained full control and never looked back, posting a final score of 41-3 over the Huskies.

The first matchup of the night, at 125 pounds, was between true freshmen Sean Boylan (BU) and Frank Martellotti (PSU). In the first period, Martellotti was able to score a takedown, but Boylan was able to escape and narrow the score to 2-1. After an escape by Boylan in the second period, the match stood even at 2-2 and was still up for grabs. In the third period Martellotti scored an escape, followed by a takedown and secured a win with a final score of 5-3. Unfortunately, the next two bouts weren't as close, as Penn State's 133-pound wrestler Bryan Pearsall was able to score a fall at the end of the first period against Bloomsburg's freshman starter Nick Wilcox. At 141 pounds, 14th- ranked Andrew Alton displayed amazing strength as he was able to pick up a pin in just 54 seconds against one of Bloomsburg's top freshman Derek Shingara.

One of the more exciting matches of the night came by way of the 149-pound matchup between BU's Josh Roosa and PSU's James English. After a scoreless first period, Roosa jumped out to a 1-0 lead by way of an escape. In the third period, English matched Roosa with an escape of his own, tying the match at 1, and sending it into overtime. In the tiebreaker period, English scored a reversal from the bottom position and three near-fall points resulting in an 8-4 victory. At the 157 pound weight class, 6th-ranked David Taylor posted an impressive 20-5 technical fall over BU sophomore Frank Hickman in 4:57. This match was followed by yet another close Bloomsburg defeat, as the talented sophomore Josh Veltre (BU) dropped the match to PSU's red-shirt freshman Jake Kemerer by a score of 3-2.

At the 174-pound class, PSU's 13th-ranked Ed Ruth displayed an offensive show as he had seven takedowns, which lead him to a victory via technical fall in 6:16, over BU's sophomore Mike Dessino. Perhaps PSU's biggest win of the night came from third-ranked Quentin Wright as he electrified the PSU fans with a pin over BU's team captain Nate Graham just 7 seconds into the second period.  Bloomsburg's lone win of the night came from 197-pound Richard Perry. Perry notched a 7-4 victory over PSU's Justin Ortega. Perry was able to outwrestle Ortega on his feet to post a total of three takedowns, two of which came in the final period. The night's match concluded with the heavyweight bout between BU's Zach Walsh and PSU's ninth-ranked Cameron Wade. Wade picked up an 8-0 victory as he was able to takedown Walsh and score riding points.

The Bloomsburg Huskies drop to 3-1 on the season as Penn State advances to 1-0. The Huskies look to get back on track at the annual Navy Classic in Annapolis, Maryland, on Nov. 20.
